Where it's deployed

The technology layer of the Saudi grid modernization programme.

From SEC's distribution-automation programme to the giga-projects built smart from day one, the same IEC 61850 infrastructure threads through every layer of the modern Saudi grid.

  1. 01

    SEC distribution automation programme

Saudi Arabia has automated 32% of its distribution network, with a target of 40%. TEPCO smart RMUs and digital kiosks are core components of this nationwide modernization.

  2. 02

    Vision 2030 megaprojects

NEOM, Qiddiya, the Red Sea Project, and other giga-projects are being built smart from day one. Full IEC 61850 substation automation is the baseline specification.

  3. 03

    Utility transmission substations

Primary substations equipped with full IEC 61850 protection and SCADA. GOOSE messaging enables fast inter-bay communication for selective tripping and adaptive protection.

  4. 04

    Renewable energy plant integration

Solar PV and wind plants need grid-edge automation for voltage regulation, fault ride-through, and grid-code compliance. Smart kiosks at the plant collection level enable it.

  5. 05

    Industrial smart energy management

Large industrial facilities use TEPCO smart infrastructure for energy management, demand response, and predictive maintenance, realizing the savings that smart panels make possible.

  6. 06

    Legacy substation modernization

Existing TEPCO equipment can be retrofitted with IEC 61850 protection relays and RTUs without full replacement. The most cost-effective path from legacy SCADA to modern automation.

Field nodes (substations, kiosks, RMUs, and renewable plants) terminate in an RTU or IED and report over a secured wide-area network to the control centre's SCADA and DMS. Every vertical link is data; IEC 60870-5-104 and 61850 carry it.

Engineered to standard

International protocols. Saudi grid compatibility.

The smart grid family is engineered per the international substation-automation and communication standards, and integrates to the SCADA conventions of SEC and other Saudi utilities.
